Regarding 'Premier Bitter'
When internationally acclaimed, Bury St. Edmunds based, artist Steve Kirin first presented me with his caricature of Margaret Thatcher with his explanation that "She was a Premier, and Premier is a recognised name for a style of bitter", I knew we were treading on psychologically dangerous ground. It was only a short leap of logic to reach the conclusion that we should feature the three main contenders for the election in a set of their very own.
As the first wave of public apathy greeted the date of the election when it was first announced, we felt that it was our public duty to try and galvanise the general public, and felt that the issue of these bottled beers would make people aware of the election date, May the ... er, something (ed, fill this bit in). We felt that as well as the opportunity to vote with their hearts, people should be given the opportunity to vote with their livers. The public response has been underwhelming, with sales reaching dizzy new heights as this vertiginous brewer fights off buyers with a big stick.
Pubs have jumped on to this potential band wagon as well with 'The Fox and Hounds' of Bradfield St George, 'The Gardeners Arms' of Moats Tye, 'The Fox' at Burwell and 'The Blue Boar' of Walsham le Willows offering their customers the opportunity to vote for whichever of the three fine party leaders they wish to have gracing the pump handle. Pubs as far away as Newcastle upon Tyne, Gloucestershire and Cambridge are joining the campaign.
One day we will be able to drop spin doctors and adopt the yard of ale as the measure of a politician. It was hoped to feature other party leaders in this promotion but the artist could not find the right shade of orange to paint Robert Kilroy Silk and the label we did for the BNP is currently invading Poland.
